MLK Tank Taco Airbrush Sessions

I do not know if Martin Luther King would approve of my hobby of creating a German vs Russian hate fest at Kursk in 15mm, but he may approve of the peaceful stress relieving effects the en-devour has on me after a week of fireworks at work.
January and a Santa Ana was forecast and I was going to make a push on the hobby front

Saturday 1/17/2015
My original idea was to be spraying early (10am), but state worker Friday got in the way.  After a week of strategic sent eMails, I needed to blow off some steam, and a bunch of beers with a co-worker at home got in the way of my prep.  So Saturday morning, I spent prepping multiple models using hot glue techniques to adhere models to sticks that I stab into styrofoam for holding models in place. It was not till about 1:45 that I started spraying. I first started off with priming some 15mm soviets in Vallejo Dunkelgleb Surface Primer. I wanted to do a light spray, however I ended up giving figure a heavy base, that dried fine.   The airbrush worked well, the pressure was around 20-18psi
Next I started on the German AFV's. Originally I wanted to do a mix of 1:1 Vallejo Middlestone to Yellow Ochre, however I spent so much time prepping that I did not to have much day left, so I decided just to go with straight middlestone over primer of dunkelgleb surface primer, which I'm not sure was needed (not sure if there is reason not to treat surface primer like regular Model Air Paint)
The temperature started dropping fast in my outdoor painting set up and the brush started clogging sporadically while spraying. The brush seem to stop spraying (hard to see when paint is being laid on model) at times, so I started pulling off the tip (i was using grey general purpose tip) and brushing the back of the tip with a brush soaked in airbrush cleaner and then putting tip back on and blowing cleaner thru brush.  However, I think that between the temperature dropping and the air getting much dryer, the Air Brush was clogging easier than usual.  I pushed the session until I finished all the german vehicles in middlestone.

Sunday 1/18/2015
On Saturday I did not get to spray any green on the soviet vehicles, and that was main reason I was motivated keep spraying.  I started spraying at around 11am till about 1:40pm. The bush worked well the whole session, with no clogging.   It was warmer and I was also more organized, so spraying went smoother
List of Sprayed Items
Below: sprayed with Vallejo MA 1:1 ratio Russian Green 71.017 to Yellow Ochre 71.033 (did about 70drips of paint into paint cup with about a 1:6 ratio Paint thinner to Paint Mix.

1/72 Armourfast Panther G revisited

Although my focus is currently 15mm, however I could not resist working on this 1/72nd  Panther G form Armourfast.

Tacks painted for pre base airbrushing.

Since the model was primed on the sprue, I had to spend time prepping model for gluing.

Hasegawa 1/72nd WWII German Sd.Kfz 7/2 37m/mAA.

Comments: I had a hard time choosing between this and 20mm/AA version. I used the computer at hobby shop to try to investigate whether this version was used summer of 1943 but could not get any useful info. I ended choosing this version over the 20mmAA because of the higher caliber, however I found later that this 37m/mAA did not appear till late 43'. So if I get a chance I'll pick up the 20mmAA version. However this might be the next model on the work bench, so I can work out any kinks in building so other Sd.Kfz's come out better.

Hasegawa 1/72nd WWII German 88mm Gun Flak 18

Comments: This is another of the 1/72nd Hesegawa models that I picked up of a collection of another modeller, being sold at the local hobby shop. This is the exact box art work that I found on the internet (as opposed to scanning my box art). All the other box art I found were very close to the boxes I purchased except this one which is exact. I believe that this and the other models are from late 70's or early 80's. I'm planning to use this a an 88 being used at Kursk. After some investigating, I believe that this early version of the 88 my not of been at kursk, but I'm not positive and anyway I'm not that anal, so I'm going plan on 88 at kursk being fired while still on wheels.

Hasgawa 1/72nd German Mercedes Benz G4

Comments: I was in hobby shop and found in a different pile of models from some one's old re-sold collection  of a bunch of 1/72nd Hasegawa models. I had seen this model before and was thinking of it being used with Pegasus' "German's in Berlin 1945" since it has figure of Hitler with 2 young Hitler youth. I passed on that model a couple of years ago, so when I saw it again, I snapped it up. I'm glad I waited because this model was packaged in late 70's or early 80's ( from my research) and it contains swastika flags for the staff car, which seems to have been dropped in newer packaging of model.

The Magic Brush. This Kolinsky Martre #1 or #0 brush keeps a better tip than my 5x#0 & 15x#0. I bought it at Discount Hobby, and I believe it had the Floquil label on it, but that has worn off. It is marked with a modle # of F102 and was made in China. Bar Code number is 052244001022. I fear it has sceen its better days and I will be needing to replace it.

August 16th thru 19th Pre Dip, Hand Paint Session

The menagerie of figures pre-dip in Minwax Polyshade
I painted these figure for the intention to dip the figures in Minwax Polyshades "Honey Gloss"(496). I want to see if this works rather than paying $30bucks for army painter dip. Minwax was about $8.50bucks. I based these figures in various colors and shades to see what my final Base coat color & shade should be.

I chosed to use coffee stir sticks to mount figures for painting. They worked well & I stuck them in styrofoam to hold  each figure between painting procedures. I also marked stick with paint color and ratio, inorder to keep details straight for the purpose of testing
I used coffee stir stick grabbed from Star Bucks and unattended coffee stations. I cut them in half & made sharp tip with  drummel tool. Latter I realized a good sprue cutter would of worked quicker and easier.

I tacked figures to sticks with super glue, then used PVA wood glue to make a more robust hold that can be undone later. Most figures were still on part of original sprues attached to base. I sometime glued spare piece of sprue to base when needed.
Colors and order of application:
1) Vallejo Basic Skin Tone 70.815 on figure flesh areas
2) Vallejo Kakie Grey 70.880 used on bag and some webbing then wanted to lighten it and made a 5:1 ration with Vallejo German Camo Beige 70.821 and painted bag with it.
Revell & Pegasus Soviets

PSC 1/72nd Hotty in Tamiya Dark Yellow (much greener than Vallejo) ready for a dip, after a little clean up on uniform.
Revell & Zvezda Soviets
Hat German Figures. Had problem with helmet color. DarkGreen  70.896 was to dark, along with German Grey 70.995 being to dark also so I went with Lonon Grey which may look better after dipping. I also did a couple german helmets in Luftwaffe Cam. Green 70.823 which looked acceptible. I thought I had the correct colors but it seems according to guides next time I'll try 70.967 Olive Green
1/72nd PSC German with London Grey Helmet & Pants. Looks good here to me
